Yesterday I went with Lisa and about 38 other islanders and tourists to Pearl Keys, a bunch of islets a bit more than an hour southwest of Little Corn. Most of them are uninhabited paradise islands, so our expectations were pretty high. Anyway, we left la Islita at 7:30 for a short stop in Big Corn (paperwork and permits from the military) before heading out towards the Keys. Unfortunately we ended up spending about three hours on Big Corn, island politics can be complicated when someone is trying to make money and other people do everything they can to get a piece of the cake. It was well worth the delay though, you can't get much more of Caribbean paradise than that.
We ended up spending the day on a small island with an abandoned hotel. Apparantely it was recently built when a hurricane destroyed it about two years ago, and the owners just left it with furniture and everything. We found a chandelier, old photos, books and furniture. There was a wedding on Little Corn this Tuesday, and most of the wedding party came with us. They brought the wedding dress and photo equipment, so they got some really cool wedding pictures in the old hotel with the Caribbean in the background!
After some snorkelling, island-exploring and lunch we got back on the boat when the afternoon turned in to evening. The ride home felt looong but we stayed in good spirits. One of the things I love most about Little Corn is the kind of travellers it attracts. It's not easy to get out here (especially not if you travel by land to Bluefields), so most people who come here are very aware of the standards on the island. No one complains when things break or a trip get delayed
So, it's time for a lot of pics! I took about a million, here's a very rough selection:
